LMD. – Qu’est-ce qui t’a amenée à franchir la porte de La Marie Debout une première fois?

SHARON. – Suite à la mort de mon chum, j’ai tout perdu: mes meubles, mes biens et mon appartement. Je me suis retrouvée à la rue toute seule. Ça a été les sept années les plus difficiles de ma vie. Je n’avais plus d’espoir et j’ai même pensé me tuer. Le jour où j’ai pensé en finir, j’ai rencontré mon amie Nisha. Elle m’a parlé d’aller à La Marie Debout. Je ne voulais pas, mais elle m’a fait promettre d’y aller le lendemain, alors j’y suis allée.

LMD. – Comment s’est déroulée cette toute première visite au centre de femmes?

SHARON. – J’ai ouvert la porte, je me suis assise et j’ai regardé autour de moi. Au début, je n’ai parlé à personne, mais une fille s’est assise avec moi. On a parlé longtemps, toute la journée presque. Je me suis tellement sentie à l’aise que j’ai oublié de lui demander son nom.

LMD. – Que dirais-tu que ces rencontres et nouvelles amitiés t’ont offert avant tout?

SHARON. – Ces femmes m’ont donné espoir, ce qui m’a rendue plus forte. J’ai commencé à croire en moi. C’était une belle surprise!

LMD. – Ton expérience à La Marie Debout t’a aussi menée vers un chez-toi et tu es sortie de la rue…

SHARON. – Oui. Malgré tout, j’avais quand même un problème à faire confiance aux autres et je ne savais pas à qui parler. Un jour, je suis allée voir Fabienne. Je lui ai demandé s’il y avait des appartements pas chers. Elle m’a donné le nom d’une place et les noms de personnes qui pourraient m’aider. Ça m’a pris un an à trouver une place, mais aujourd’hui j’ai une maison à moi et c’est grâce à mon amie et à La Marie Debout. Ce que j’aime au centre de femmes, c’est qu’il n’y a pas de jugement et s’il y en a, je ne le ressens pas.

LMD. – Comment inviterais-tu d’autres femmes du quartier à découvrir La Marie Debout?

SHARON. – La Marie Debout, c’est comme les Nations Unies: des femmes de toutes provenances viennent au centre et sont accueillies à bras ouverts. La Marie Debout a tant de choses à offrir aux femmes. On peut aussi venir pour manger des biscuits, boire du jus. La Marie Debout, c’est un club de dames et j’aime ça!

LMD. – What brought you to La Marie Debout for the first time?

SHARON. – My boyfriend passed away, I lost all of my stuff and on top of everything, I lost my apartment. I found myself on the street and on my own for the first time. Those were the hardest seven years of my life. I saw no hope and started thinking about killing myself. The day I planned to do it, I ran into my friend Nisha who told me to go to La Marie Debout. I said no, but she made me promise to go to the center the next day, so I went.

LMD. – Can you tell us about that very first visit and how it unfolded?

SHARON. – I walked through the door, sat down and looked around. I didn’t talk to anyone at first but then, a woman sat down with me and started talking to me. We talked all day long and I was so comfortable that I forgot to ask her name.

LMD. – Above all, what would you say you gained from these new encounters and friendships at La Marie Debout?

SHARON. – They gave me hope, made me stronger and I even started to believe in myself. I was surprised.

LMD. – Your experience at La Marie Debout also contributed to you finding a home and getting off the street…

SHARON. – Yes. Amidst everything I still had a problem with trusting others and I didn’t know who to go to. So, I went to Fabienne and asked her if she knew of any cheap apartment. She gave me the name of a place to go saying the people there would help me. It took me one year to get the place but now, I have a home and that is thanks to my friend and La Marie Debout. What I like about the center is that there is no judgement and if there is, I don’t see it.

LMD. – How would you invite other women from the neighborhood to visit La Marie Debout?

SHARON. – La Marie Debout is like the United Nations: women of all races go there and are welcomed with open arms. La Marie Debout has so much to offer women. You can also eat cookies, drink juice. La Marie Debout is a ladies’ club and I like that!
